The Long Ride Home
Left Athens this morning on separate planes :o( Trish on Lufthansa and Erin and Tad on British Airways.  Excellent breakfast on the plane and arrived at Munich and London, respectively, a few hours later.  The security at Munich was unbelievable.  They made Trish disassemble her camera and wanded her about every 20 feet.  But that's good, right?  Sure better than the lax security we saw in Santorini.  London was uneventful, but that’s where it ended . . . Tad and Erin endured 8+ hours of a SCREAMING child over the Atlantic.  I kid you not, it never stopped, and the parents did not appear to be doing much at all about it!  And while we understand that flight attendants have an often thankless job, wouldn’t you think that they would have made some attempt to see if there was anything they could do to assist the parents, for the child’s sake as well as everyone else??  Nada.  Unbelievable.

The one highlight of the flight was that I happened to look out the window about mid-flight and right there as clear as day was a Lufthansa 747 flying just below us.  It was quite surreal, and we expected it could be Trish’s plane, so I snapped a shot and waved.

After sheer chaos at O’Hare in Chicago in getting through customs and finding our gates for the flight home, we finally boarded our flights home to Kansas City where Trish’s mom picked us up and all made it home safely.

And, for the finale . . . . (drum roll, please) this morning, I received a call from the American Embassy in Rome with some fantastic news.  Someone turned in my wallet, cash in tact!!  And it was about twice as much money as I thought was in there (or at least wanted to believe was in there).  This is truly a miracle considering the play by play account in our blog of that day.  I would not have bet one red cent on the odds of getting it back and was 110% sure those two girls snagged it.  I owe them an apology and a big thank you if they were the ones who turned it in.
We are all very thankful for the opportunity to take this fantastic trip and will have memories to treasure always.  It is quite something to arrive in Kansas City and realize we were in Athens just the evening before having dinner overlooking the Acropolis.  We are also very thrilled this morning to see that we’ve not missed the best of the fall color on this beautiful October morning.   It’s wonderful to travel, but it’s also wonderful to be home and appreciate all the benefits and blessings we have.

Thanks to all who followed our journey!  It made it special knowing that we had friends following us every step of the way.  We hope you enjoyed our journey as much as we all did!!!!

Love to all,
Erin, Tad, and Trish

I really enjoyed following your vacation! The blogs were entertaining and the photos stunning! The scenery, particularly the architecture, contrasts sharply with the bland suburban vistas back in the States (think big box store painted "Johnson County taupe"). Your minds will no doubt be overseas for months to come. Welcome back, and thanks for sharing an enviable experience!

Hi all, I followed you daily. Loved all your pics and the comments as well. Craig & I took a trip for our 40th wedding anniv and saw some of these things too so some of it looked familiar. We started in Athens, cruised to Rome with a few stops along the way and spent a week in Italy. It was our best trip ever so I know how much fun it was for you guys. The places you stayed were fabulous. Thanks so much for sharing your trip.

Bummer.... it's over. So glad you are back. Where next?
P.S. Some of our more techno-challenged relatives (HELLO MOM) wanted to send comments all along, but could not get there for some reason. Everyone has commented on how wonderful the blog was and how much they enjoyed the daily "fix". Looking forward to the next one. Please, no pictures of Lenexa.
