After breakfast, we headed down to the beach to hitch a boat over to the island of Spinalonga and hiked all around the island for 2 hours. Inhabited as early as the 1500s and used as a defensive fort and later a leper colony, it was a unique experience. We can best describe it as taking you back to childhood if you liked to play cowboys and indians or hide and seek. Great fort-like perches everywhere you look. A couple of times as we were scaling up to the top, we imagined that all we needed was a beret and a rifle and we'd be in one of those Spanish Resistance movies!
Tad came back down and told us he'd seen goats up at the top, so nothing to do but hike up there and try to see for ourselves . . . we saw not a trace of a goat and while he insisted he saw one, we're pretty sure he was pulling our leg. One interesting item of note was the so-called handicapped ramp in front as you go in. We're pretty sure a wheelchair wouldn't make it over those boards.
Next plan was to go grab our suits and get some pool time, but alas, it began to rain. Plan B was to venture down to the little village of Platka near the resort. Good thing we took our umbrellas, 'cuz it poured puppies and kittens for awhile. We slipped into a couple of shops and picked up a few souvenirs and then sat by the shore for a bit after it stopped raining. We finally did get to see some goats, and the little ones are so cute, aren't they? Really wanted to take one home!
Had a pretty sunset, and Trish and I walked down to Platka for dinner by the water. Tad needed a rest . . . seems like all of us has had one of those days where we're zonked with the time change, etc. Had great girl talk and stopped by to see what the goats were up to after dinner. While they scattered at first, we patiently waited by the fence making goat noises, and eventually, they cautiously came over. We may just have to sneak out tonight about 2am and kidnap a couple of kidds to take home! They pretty much hit every branch on the cute tree :o) Snapped some good photos. Then, we use the iphone to navigate the river rock back to the hotel. That dang thing even has a flashlight! Unbelievable.
Hard to believe we still have Santorini and Athens ahead of us . . . we'll have 2 nights in Santorini and then a 1/2 day in Athens before we head back West. Santorini photos should be some of the best yet. Tonight it's late and we need to get packed and catch some rest, so the photos won't be labeled. Enjoy!
