Ferrara, a great medieval city, old cobbled streets with a castle and more good food.  It was still really rainy, but my half broken umbrella from chinatown in san francisco is still going strong, well, it keeps me dry anyway.  I was walking around at night and heard some of those horns that you hear in cartoons that announce the king. I started following the sound and found this piazza full of people doing some kind of medieval band practise with flag twirling and giant drums.  that was cool and ancient feeling in that very old town.
the next day I was planning on taking a train straight to trieste, but with venice on the way, how could I not stop?  So, I spent the afternoon in venice wandering around and first, being amazed at all the tourists there, and then secondly at the amazing beauty of that city.  the water is sooo pretty, the skyline out of all those paintings you have seen with big puffy clouds and all (luckily the rain is stopping!)
made my way to trieste, found the hotel and parked myself there for the night watching mtv and eating ritz crackers from the mini bar.  There was all this crazy booming going on during the night. I thought, great, now a new war is starting. so I called downstairs and it turned out it was some big celebration for the "maratona" that was going on the next day.  Well, of course the next day there were people with shorts and numbers everywhere, so I went to watch and saw the little pack of Kenyans leading the way, that was kind of fun.  Later, I went out to the airport and met my friend Kimby who flew in all the way from California to join me on the trip!  So much fun to see her, and kind of wierd to be walking around halfway across the world chit chatting just like we are walking down the beach at home.  I am so happy she came!
