Loooooong train ride again into France, the train broke down too, so we had to haul our stuff off and get on another train an hour later.  My French has to get back into to gear again, after 3 weeks of my Spanish groove, it is hard to switch.  This is feeling familiar to the beginning of the trip!
I am staying in Nice because there are ferries to Corsica from here, which is my next step.  I thought there would be ferries all the time, but I had to wait about four days...so I ended up doing some short hops along the coast.  Nice is very built up, lots of ugly apartment buildings along with the pretty old ones along the beach strip.  Well, beach, it is all rocks here.  But there are million chairs out along the beach walk, so it is easy to while away the hours watching people and reading and eating pan au chocolat.  They have also filled the beach with cafes that also have beach chairs that you rent.  So everything is very packed in.  It just does not look relaxing.  To me the beach is about the outdoors, peace and quiet....it is a different scene here, obviously not for me.
I found a cheapie hotel with a really super cheap ugly room (20 euros), basically because it is like a closet with a bathroom.  Who cares, I only have to sleep there.  I am paying less for four nights than most people pay for one! Anyway, Nice has a nice old quarter that I wandered around in, did some grocery shopping at the Monoprix, did my laundry.  I took a day trip to Monaco which was really fun.  I talked to a guy in a store there and he said that everything that gets sold in the stores there (even all the tourist junk) has to get approval from the king.  It is a very orderly place, not really any crime in the streets, and really clean...it almost feels fake, and of course there are alot of big yachts in the harbor, just like in Nice, and Cannes.  I went to Cannes too for a day, kind of a zoo since there was some kind of giant media convention, people with badges all over the place.  Still, a few beautiful people were roaming around looking very fancy.
I guess I am learning, or reinforcing the idea, that I really am drawn to remote places, a little bit rough around the edges.  I seem to complain more about all these built up areas and lots of people, but I still want to see them for some reason.  So, on to Corsica!
