I took the train up here from Lisbon, trundled with my huge bag across the cobbled walkways and turned and corner and my jaw dropped...what a breathtaking little city!  It is nestled up a hill with an old Moor fort on top, another hill with another castle, the main castle in town with two huge chimneys, and beautiful old manors all dotted around.  I found a really nice guest house, in an old traditional family home.  Perfect, except there is only one bathroom for about 5 rooms.  It's a very cozy place, which is good since it is still cold, even a little rainy.  I decided to maintain my walking standard that I set in the Azores, so that means I am out walking about a minimum of 4 hours everyday. (believe me, this adds up to stiff muscles! I need that massage I had in myanmar!)  So my days are turning into liesurely breakfasts, walking until 2 or 3, lunch in a restaurant, then strolling home, to maybe go out again later.  Kind of perfect for me.  So Sintra has a lot of nice walks, since it is in the hills, and a tiny old town to wander in.  Today I walked 19 kms to the coast (I don't think normal people do this) and stopped at another palace/garden on the way.  It was a totally rainy day, luckily, I was in the right place when it started hailing! (I was actually at the gardens, and hung out in the guardhouse with the guard who proceeded to tell me about her enlightenment by buddha and talking to angels and quitting smoking) When I got to the coast it was all sunny, and looked alot like home!  I took the bus back, which wasn't as fun as walking, but much more relaxing.  It is kind of wierd to be around tourists again.  I feel like I have been pretty lucky and avoided the hordes all this time but it is easter week, so they are out in droves (lots of people from spain, they wear alot of brown and burnt orange)....  It is sort of good for people watching I guess.  I have been so used to having trails and churches all to myself, I guess I will have to share now.
