Where I stayed
Hone Heke Lodge
We left Auckland in search of work in the northland. The plan was to head north to where the Fruit picking season was beginning. We decided on Kerikeri as this is the fruit picking capital of the northland. It's a small town but nice all the same. We arrived in Kerikeri on 8th April, applied at the local supermarket on the 9th, had an interview on 10th and began work on the 14th - not bad eh? I'm now a fully fledged member of New World's Deli Counter, Kerikeri! I've had a couple of days working and its clear the work isn't easy but it's going to beat fruit picking, especially now that the weather has changed.
Whilst working I'm staying at a local hostel, it's great, we have our own room for around 7 pounds a night- bargain! I'm looking forward to have a settled period for the next month or so.
On our days off we have plans to see all that Northland has to offer. So far we've done the walk from the hostel to Rainbow Falls, a walk to Haruru Falls and a day out to Russell via the car ferry. Last Sunday we headed up to the Far North on a day trip. This included driving on 90 Mile beach, riding the Sand Dunes at Te Paki Stream, a walk in a Kauri tree forest and visiting Cape Reinga itself. It was a fun day and best of all was sharing with some friends from the hostel.
As far as our nightly plans, most have included a film of some sort but we've had a couple of special nights. One night we had a BBQ and playing drinking games and then last night we ventured into Kerikeri to check out their saturday night entertainment. It was a good night and the majority of people in the pub were actually from our hostel.
I finished at New World on Saturday 10th May, I was sad to leave the people I worked with over the last month but it was time to move on. That night I went out with the girls from my hostel and met up with someone else from work. We had a great night at The Homestead, dancing our socks off!
Before leaving New Zealand our last stop was Auckland for a night. We stayed at Ponsonby Backpackers which was really nice and for my last night we went to see Westlife - all I can say is they were fab!!
So I leave New Zealand now after 11 weeks, I have fallen in love with the beauty of this country and hope I can come back real soon.
Farewell NZ...!
