My time is getting short. I write filled with excitement and extreme anxiety as February 6 draws nearer. Today, after a great service at church that most of my family attended, I began the arduous task of packing my belongings for storage and those that will accompany me on the 12 hour plane ride to Paraguay.
I moved into my little studio apartment about 7 months ago, and I never really got totally unpacked. As I mentioned in an earlier posting, I have lived out of suitcases and boxes really ever since I sent my application off back in December 2005. I have managed to get most everything I am leaving behind down to about 15 storage totes. I have thrown out a lot of things...and my brother came by today to get some of my furniture. As I saw him pull off with my (well now, former) beige suede couch and loveseat, something overcame me...I thought to myself...it's now getting real. When you walk back into your apartment, that was once rather overcrowded, to a huge empty space and just my bed and computer desk left - you really digest the feeling that "hey Trevor...this is what you wanted...it's finally getting to the end." It's hard to let go of some of my things...constantly in the back of my head, I say "I just may need that when I come back in 2 years" or "I paid $6 for that stainless steel slotted spoon...I just can't give that away." I think the biggest lesson I have learned since wanting to "do this thing" is to be humble...to be truly appreciative of what you have now...when I come back in two years - let alone in 7 months for my brother's wedding - that tune will change...it will just become cemented in stone.
I've got exactly 10 days left until I officially become homeless. What a strange feeling. A good feeling though, is official word that I will get back my security deposit even though I am breaking my contract (hey...they knew up front the deal!). That's really going to help on paying for my flight back home for my brother's wedding in August. I'm glad I took this long-term sub job to keep my mind off things - in a way, sometimes I wish I had more time to devote to getting my affairs in order...but I'm taking in one day at a time. I've got a huge list of to do things before February 6, and in the last 3 hours, I have added 4 things to it!
Just a few things I need to still do -
-waiting on USC to officially post my degree
-getting Power of Attorney forms filled out
-getting the finances sorted out (never knew $ could be such a huge deal when you are absent from "the real world" for just a couple of years."
Those are just a few - lots of little things though - like "where did my neighbors put the roll away trash cart that needs to be out by the driveway tomorrow morning for pickup---I need it to put three bags of things I've got to throw out...LOL!!!"
Crazy...it really is. Anywho, I've got a few papers I still need to grade for my students tomorrow and then I will call it a night.
Until next time...
Your ambassador to the world, Trevor
