Ginny and Kenny's house
Saturday morning we got up at the more reasonable time of 6.30am. Yeesh! A tad early to say the least - go jetlag! After the rest of the house got up, we headed out for breakfast. Singapore has these amazing food courts located all over the place called 'hawker stalls'. Basically you can get a million different kinds of food at all time of night or day. We headed for one near Ginny and Kenny's house and went for this breakfast that was made of cold chicken that had been boiled and then sauked in an amazing soy and spice sauce. It was served on top of warm flavoured rice with lots of delicious, I think pickled cucumbers. I can't remember what it was called but it was deeeelicious.
After our satisfing breakfast we headed out to a commercial fish farm that raises tropical fish for aquariums, a major export of Singapore. I was really intrigued to learn this because one of the reasons I've been holding off on getting a tropical fish tank was because I thought they were caught in the wild
After the fish farm visit we headed out to the National Orchid garden. It was spectacular! The best botanical garden I've ever been to. Undoubtedly because I love orchids so much, but really, the blossoms were so phenomenal. Words and pictures cannot describe. My favorite part was the celebrity garden where they develop new hybrids and name them after famous people. My new life goal is to get an orchid in there named after me ,)
We grabbed lunch at the Orchid gardens and it was this typical Malaysian dish, which I can't remember the name of, but which consists of a piece of fried chicken, fried fish, a peanut and fried anchovy mix, rice and cucmbers. It was really delicious but the heat and humidity was so punishing it was hard to stir up a big appetite to attack it. Nonetheless we polished it off. It was really yummy!
After the Orchid Gardens we beat it over to the sweet air con of the national museum. The museum had two exhibits I really wanted to see: the evolution of shopping bags in Singapore, as well as the history of Singapore. While we didn't have as much time to linger over the history as I would have liked, I got a really good idea of how Singapore came to be
After the museum we headed off to the beach for an amazing feast of food. But before that we made a quick stop at this huge hydro/land reclamation project called barrage. On top of the buildings they built this huge green space where you get a great view of the city and where people fly kites. Basically a giant park in the sky. Surreal!
Right overlooking the ocean on the beach we started supper with a divine cold salad of duck, mango and cucumber in a sweet sweet sauce. We the had some weird looking clams cooked in some kind of garlic sauce. Heaven. Then we moved on to a very famous dish: chili crab. Basically a whole huge crab cooked in a vat of chili sauce. It came with buns that tasted like angel food cake to be used for soaking up the sauce. Delicious. The next course was a whole fried fish, posing in the sauce. Cute! Then we had drunken prawns. Dessert was a lemon jelly dish and a cocunut rice tapioca creation. My belly really, really hurt after dinner. But it was amazing!!!!
So far I've come to understand Singapore is all about the eating and the shopping. My Mecca.
