With an extra day in Madrid before my flight I spent a few hours walking around some of the less-famous areas of the historic city.  First, I took the subway over to the Manzanares River and its park-lined banks.  Then, I strolled through one of Madrid's relaxing parks until I hit the Templo de Debod, a present given by Egypt to Spain for its role in saving the temple of Abu Simbel (quite the site itself) from the floodwaters of Lake Nasser following the construction of the Aswan Dam in southern Egypt.  So, there you are in Madrid, walking through a park, admiring the superb views of the old town and Spanish architecture and you come across this Egyptian temple in the middle of nowhere!  Strange, but fantastic as well!

Then it was through the parks of the Royal Palace for a bit of reading and a bite to eat while surrounded by 400 year old statues and evergreen trees.  Then through Puerta del Sol, a final sandwich at the Museo del Jamon and a phenomenal dinner at Botin, the world's oldest continuously running restaurant (1725).  The ambiance and character of the place was amazing...and the sucking pig and roasted lamb weren't too shabby either!  A great place to end our Spanish vacation!
