Today was rough roads and slow-going, but a very pretty 241 km from the lake to Vank (somewhere in or near the Republic of Karabach...a newish wanna-be country that split from Azerbaijan about 20 years ago).
The landscape through the Sokt valley is beautiful and very diverse with canyons, mountain streams and remnants from the war, such as burned-out tanks. A slow, but easy drive took us(accidentally) to the Azerbaijan border, prompting a quick turn-around...to the 9th century Dadivank monastery, a hillside religious complex filled with ancient khatchkars (carved stone crosses)...to one of the best and most important Armenian monasteries, Gandzashar...and finally to Vank and our very eclectic hotel with its themed hotel, open air stage with waterfall, and walls covered with license plates!
A good day of driving and sightseeing complemented with a relaxing and interesting atmosphere to chill at night. :)
