Flag of Switzerland  , Swiss Alps,
Monday, November 15, 2010

Mid-morning we headed to Wengen, a small village nestled within the Swiss Alps, 1500 meters above the more well-known city of Interlaken.  As I wrote previously, Amelia's best friends family owns a chalet in the village and let us stay for the week.  Also, if you recall, I made a few Swiss friends (well 2 Swiss, 1 German, and 1 Austrian - but they all live in Switzerland) while on safari in Botswana and they decided to come meet us in Wengen our first night for a small reunion.

Arriving in Interlaken from Geneva, we are soon met by Andi and Urs...after a bit of shopping we drive up to Lauterbrunnen, park the car, and catch the train up to Wengen (no cars are allowed in Wengen).  What a train ride - waterfalls to the left, snow-covered Alps to the right, and good friends in the middle!  Eventually making it to the chalet, we unwind a bit and enjoy a nice cold beer on the deck, which just happens to have a spectacular view of the tallest mountains in Europe!  The deck overlooks a waterfall, other villages, snow-capped peaks, and the green valley below - everything you imagine when you think of the Swiss Alps.  Thanks so much to Amelia and her friend, Zoe, for sharing such a beautiful place!

Anyways, after awhile Stefan and Eileen make it there and at night we head off into town.  It's about a 15 minute walk to the "town", but with the fresh air, beautiful surroundings, and good people we're there in a snap!  Finding a good restaurant (harder than usual as many places are
closed up until the official ski season), our Swiss hosts introduce us to Swiss fondue - bread and potatoes dipped into melted cheese and oil...very tasty!  Spotting a bar on the way back, we pop in for a few drinks and a few laughs.  Reaching the chalet a bit later, the fun times continue with the girls, aka the Vodka Twins, getting a bit rowdy and the hilarious events that followed...but, not wanting to potentially embarrass anyone, particularly in writing, I'll just say that it was a VERY memorable evening...however, feel free to ask me about it if you ever wanna hear a VERY funny story about the Vodka Twins of Wengen!!! ;)
