Sri Lanka is great, definitely worth a few weeks of your time. Whether you're into ancient temples or beautiful beaches, wild elephants or pesky monkeys, sunrise hiking or scuba diving, relaxing on the beach or surfing the waves, you can find a great place to do all the above in Sri Lanka.

Traveling:

If you plan on traveling around SL, then it's best to hire a driver.  I used SL Driver Tours
(http://www.srilankadrivertours.com/srilankadrivertours.php or email Hasantha - nilupul7h@yahoo.com) and had no complaints.  My driver, Mahinda, was very friendly and
accommodating and this company was by FAR the best deal I found {US$31 day in a nice car including 100km, gas, driver , driver lodging and food (90% of the time)}.  Others I contacted were wanting 45 euros per day or more, but not offering more and sometimes even less!

My favorite spots:
Mihintale - sacred mountain site

Kandy area (stayed at Nature Walk Eco Resort - http://www.naturewalkhr.com/ - nice and friendly)

Pinnaewala - elephant orphanage

Adam's Peak (stayed in a colonial tea house; inquire at village center hotels) - sunrise hike

Hikkaduwa (stayed at Time-n-Tide Resort; friendly people, good prices, good location) - relaxation, scuba diving, surfing, etc.
