Day 10 - 10.25.02 (Fri) Osaka Castle - Hooked up with Brady and Liz today to go check out Osaka Castle. The castle was originally built in 1583, but what you see in the pics is actually a 1931 reconstruction of it because the castle ended up not being as impregnable as once thought and was destroyed in 1615. It was great to finally get out and see some culture. I was beginning to think I was in NYC! I definitely will be heading out more often, alone if necessary, to catch the sites. I plan on heading to a small national park on Monday and then to Kyoto for some temple seeing on Tuesday. After a few hours at the castle we go to Hard Rock Café Osaka, I know, I wouldn't even think about going to HRC in the US, but the thought of a nice burger was too tempting, plus it was happy hour and half-priced drinks! ;) Ahhh, beef!! I will have to find a way to treat myself once a week to its fulfilling sensation...it was the first time I have felt satiated since I arrived! Anyway, we meet a guy from Canada named Victor who decides to hang out with us for the evening. Great guy, lots of information about places to go and teaching English. We bar hop a bit, tell stories, and he gives us the low down on the love hotels. See, most people live with their parents until the at least get married, then they still live with their parents sometimes. Love hotels give them and foreigners some privacy, but these hotels are wild. Most of them are themed, like spaceships or on a boat, with rotating beds and a whole bunch of craziness. You can "check in" for a few hours or stay the night. Funny stuff, I'll have to go to one and send a few pics back! But, the way the nightlife works over here is go out early and head home early. They have 3 rush hours...morning, evening, and late night, when people are trying to catch the last train of the night . The trains stop running at 12:20 am, so there's this mad rush at about midnight. If you miss your train and you're not close to home, most people just stay out all night until the trains start running in the morning!! A lot of bars don't close until very late, like 5 am or so. Anyway, heading home because my first real day of work is tomorrow...should be hectic and frustrating!
