We arrived at Westport a town that had made its fortune in coal mining, there is not a massive amount to do at Westport but it's a great base to start one of the planets 10 best road trips south. We found an amazing hostel with a great back garden for our tent and as the owner was away the young girl said it was $17 for the tent rather that $17 per person which would be the going rate so we ripped her arm off and made sure we were out all afternoon so she couldn’t find us to inform us she got it wrong. We chilled out and watched a film on the night and decided to stay an extra night as the price was wrong. She took the money again and didn’t realise she was wrong. The weather was great on the afternoon so we just lay in the garden with a cold beer planning the next route.
That night we were struggling to shake off a guy that was a resident in the hostel, he was obviously bored and started chatting to us, he didn’t seem a full shilling but we chatted about everything, I heard Justin chatting to him in the kitchen and he said who are the fools in the tent to which Justin said "oh that’s us" I wasn’t too happy him knowing that as I wasn’t too happy him knowing that as he was a bit odd and we had watched a scary movie the night before. Anyway what’s done is done and off to camp we went, we were getting in our sleeping bags when I heard a noise outside so we both stopped what we were doing then the guy rope pulled as if someone had tripped over it, so again we just sat looking at each other, I thought it might be a woman getting her washing in off the line, when the sides and the back of the tent were getting pushed in like someone was trying to scare us, Justin just sat there and looked at me, until I shouted “Who’s there?” nothing, so I put my shoes on a jumped out of the tent and tin the dark there was nobody there, again Justin still in the tent just sat there, when all of a sudden two cats jumped out from under the outer layer of the tent, what a shock I got, I chased them away and Justin sat very quiet in the tent. I though the men were meant to save us girls in situation like that!
Before we left Westport we headed up to Turanga Bay to take a walk along the coast and see an old lighthous. The bay was beautiful with great views out to sea. There was a seal colony so we watched the family of seals lie about, the babies were so small and playful it was great to watch. We drove around to the other cove where the lighthouse was and when we climbed up to take a look, the old lighthouse had been taken down and we were left with a modern one was wasn't very pretty at all, Justin felt robbed. We turned about and walked back down the hill and just as we were clinbing back in the car a few Weka birds came waddling over they were so tame they just walked right up to me looking for food....Haha as if I would give them any of my food! We nearly had another passanger as one of them tried to climb into the car.
