Still heading south down the west coast we stopped off at a Kauri Forest Sanctuary which has the largest remnants of the Kauri forest, the Kauri tree is amazing and when fully grown can reach 60 meters in height and have a trunk 5meters in diameter. We firstly walked to see the largest tree Tane Mahuta named for the Maori forest god, it is said to be 2000 years old. We also saw Te Matuna Ngahere ( the father of the forest) which was the second largest tree, The four sisters which is 4 trees that have fused together at the base. I had such a good day, I could walk all day through woodland.
We arrived at Dargaville and there was only 2 camping grounds, fist one was not good and the second one we came to didn't have land for tents but the lovely man tried to sell us a apartment for the night which was out our budget, he said he had a caravan and he would give it to us for $30 for the night as the weather is not good. He took us around the corner to a yard where in the distance there it stood, a caravan that was older than me. We agreed as we had no choice really and it wasn’t too bad inside there was a fridge and a heater so I was fine. On my 1km walk back from the toilet I couldn’t stop laughing at the sight of the caravan and the car next to each other in what I can only describe as a lock up....really gone up in the world! However because we were parked out the back of Subway it was nice to wake to the smell of meatball marinara!
Our next stop off was meant to be Hellensville but when we got there it was a bit grim so we continued 20km further to Muriwari beach, and pitched up in a campsite right next to the beach. We walked up to the cliff tops to the Takapu refuge gannet colony, we stood at the viewing platforms to watch (and smell) these fascinating seabirds. I’ll be honest it was just like being at home, but the views over the beach were fantastic. When we checked in the campsite the manager said we would have free wifi but only for emailing, not for downloading music or films off u tube. We agreed then spent the whole night downloading tom tom, films, music and Windows 7...Excellent!
