Before I came to India and even during the travel I never heard about Varkala. Julian however heard good stories about it so there we went. The first impression was super and we both knew that we would like to stay here a few days. Accommodation we found at Shiva Gardens, a chilled out place where we spent the first night on the roof where they created an open air dorm but with a roof. Just a few matrasses on the ground with a mosquito net and that was it. The next day we got ourselves a romantic tree house (see pics) and there we spent 3 more nights.

Varkala is a beach place where the beach is disconnected from all the shops and restaurants which lay on a cliff 30 meters above the beach. This is particularly a place for couples and older people and as well a good place to bump into fellow travelers as both Julian and me experienced. In the bus we already met with Felix, an English 'bloke' living and working in Switzerland and it turned out that we were an almost inseparable group of guys and we talked about the most crazy topics and kept going the whole day. He was very much into Yoga and spirituality so we even went for meditation early in the morning on the beach. It was a special experience and Felix guided us through the whole process. I managed to concentrate and sit in 1 position for 50 min and then my legs really hurted. Julian was far away with his thoughts and kept going for almost another hour, impressive! We participated in a Yoga class as well but this was not good at all so fortunately the full body massage afterwards felt great.

During the days it was chilling on the beach, crashing on the waves, playing some  beach tennis, badminton and drinking and eating ofcourse. At night there were 2 places to go to, Rock ‘n Roll bar and the Chill Out café where we met with more interesting people. In the end we spend quite some time with some American ladies and guys. To get away from all the relaxing we hired a motorbike to discover the area a bit more. The town of Kollum sounded interesting but in reality it was boring apart from the 35 Rs lunch where you could eat as much as you want. On the way back we saw some ceremony with Elephants along the road and this was a pleasant surprise and cool to witness.

Varkala is hence definitely a place I would recommend and I had a great time here. Probably due to all the interesting people I met as well. For Julia and me this was the end of the road for our travel partnership so after a goo hug I got my bag and went to the train station.

Practical stuff

-          Shiva Gardens is definitely recommended.

-          For a massage you have different options and do negotiate. For a 60 min full body massage we paid 400 Rs.
