Kashikishi itself is a quiet but charming place, a big village but without an ATM or other luxuries. I enjoyed the day by walking along the shores of beautiful Lake Mweru. Everywhere people lived and since no tourists come there I felt like a true pop star again which is greeted everywhere with the famous Swahili word 'Mzungu’
Option 1: Get a big bus which goes to the Nakonde border and stops in Mpika. From there bus to Mpulungu. Estimated travel time: 24 hours
Option 2: Hitchhike in a direction where there is a very bumpy road and not much traffic passes by. Estimated travel time: 15- 35 hours.
Option 3: Take taxi’s and minibuses to Kasama and from there a bus. Very expensive option and estimated travel time: 20 hours
Option 4: Take big bus to Mansa and from there get a straight bus to Mpulungu. Estimated travel time: 20 hours.
Option 4 would be it and also because I start off as early as 4 am
- Before going to Kashikishi think about your next destination. As described here the public transport options are not very nice if you go to Tanzania after this.
- The last Saturday of July is the Mutumbuku ceremony in Kasembe close to Kashikishi so if possible try to be there then.
