When leaving Ai-Ais me and Laurens took an Irish couple along and dropped them at Grunau so they could hitchhike their way down to Capetown. In Keetmanshoop we visited our 'friend' Eva at the cafeteria where we also had chips and chicken when we came to Keetmanshoop the first time. Then it was time to say goodbye and I drove to Luderitz. I took in a Namibian girl who was hitchhiking and although her English was not too good we enjoyed Lucky Dube on the way west.

In Luderitz I dropped the car at Avis car hire and luckily everything was fine. I recognized the ugliest car you have ever seen and saw that it was the South African couple I met at the Fish River Canyon, that was nice. In the evening we went for dinner and some drinks in a local bar and finally I returned to my couchsurf host Giel for the night.

I spent 3 nights at Giel’s place and spent some time in a real German bar with some typical German-White Namibians who enjoy themselves there every day with some beers. Luderitz is a nice town to visit due to its location and the architecture but for the rest there is not much to do. I just been walking around to a place called Shark Island. Around the year 1900 there was a concentration camp there and Namibian slaves were treated very badly and 90% of them died there. Now there is a campsite and you can enjoy the view from there, but still strange if you think about its history.

Because I was a tourist I decided to go for a boat trip to see dolphins, seals and penguins which I have never seen before. A nice trip and some interesting stories from the one of the sailors who has been traveling around the world for 11 years with his family. Wow!

Because there were no buses going from Luderitz on the day I wanted to leave I waited at the ENGEN filling station and after 1,5 hour got a ride in a big truck with 4 other Namibians. Cool!

Practical stuff

-          Because of its remoteness it is difficult to get out of Luderitz. Hitchhike at the ENGEN station to go to Keetmanshoop or other destinations.
