Together with Franzi(sca), a German girl who is doing her internship in Lusaka (Zambia), and our guide Steven we went on a canoe trip along the Zambezi river organized by 'River Horse'. A 3 day and 2 night trip in which we canoed for 45 kilometers, did a walking safari and a game drive back to the camp. This trip was not without dangers since we have seen about 300 hippo's and 40 crocodiles while canoeing. But we had an experienced guide who leaded us in safe waters and had very interesting stories at night. Stories about encounters with wild animals, what to do and what not to do, and stories about people who didn't listen and were sometimes killed by a croc or hippo.
For 3 days we were canoeing in the morning, had a good lunch somewhere along the river and went further to reach the final place where we would camp. On the second day we had more so did a walking safari and came very close to 5 elephants including a little one, exciting! It's funny that in the beginning you are very cautious for the animals and after 1 day you just paddle if a crocodile enters the water. Eventually nothing happened and we had a very good time.

Practical stuff
  • A canoe trip is definitely worth it but 3 days is more than enough and try to agree on a good price with the company.
  • It's possible to do it from the Zim side and from the Zam side so make sure you know in advance where the company does it (I was surprised and had to Zambia for this trip inclusing a visa etc).
