The greatest medieval city in sub-Saharan Africa provides evidence that ancient Africa reached a high level of civilization back then. Zimbabwe means 'house of stone' so that's where the name origins from.  Great Zimbabwe has big walls of 11 meters high and at most 5 meters thick without the use of cement which is quite amazing! Ofcourse I couldn't ignore this cultural heritage so packed my bag and tent and went for a trip to this medieval city.

It was not easy to get there but eventually I did and arranged myself a guide. For $21 I had the entrance including a guided tour by a guy called Lovemore. He showed me around and explained the histroy which was very interesting. Because his wife and kid were somewhere else we decided to go for dinner together somewhere outside the monument and a 15 minute walk. We got dinner for $1 (sadza with beef and vegetables) which tasted good. Went for a beer afterwards and played some darts together. Ofcourse I was the center of attention and made a lot of (drunk male) friends in the bar. Then it was time to go to sleep in the worst dormitory ever with only one iron bed and a mattress without any sheets  or blankets. Luckily I brought my sleeping bag so I was alright.

In the morning took a shower and was accompanied by some curious monkeys. I've already seen a lot of monkeys but still they are amazing interesting animals.

Practical stuff
  • From Harare to Great Zimbabwe go to the Mbale bus station in Harare and get a bus to Masvingo ($8, 5 hours) and from there get a bus to Great Zimbabwe. This is not straightforward as you have to walk through Masvingo and ask where you can get on a bus. You'll be dropped at a junction and from there it's a 15 minute walk to Great Zimbabwe.
