Where I stayed
Kilimanjaro Lodge and Emma's place

Wednesday, June 22, 2011

In advance I didn't really know anything about Iringa only what I read in the Lonely Planet and I had a couchsurf host. After checking in in the Kilimanjaro Lodge I contacted Emma (Finnish couchsurf girl) and had a cup of coffee with her and Jonathan (Germany). Jonathan beat me because he was already surfing at Emma's place. In the evening had some drinks at 'Mama's' and met with Jari (Finnish guy aka 'Taxi Rox'). For 3 days and night I was hanging out with these guys and had a very good time. Every evening drinking at 'Shooters' and the 'VIP Club' and met quite some nice people.

Apart from the partying I also went up the mountain exploring the Gangilonga rock which was very nice since you could get up where you had a very nice view of Iringa. The jumping photo was a lucky shot since I put it on a rock on the 10 second setting and then tried to pick the right moment and somehow it went right the first time I tried! After leaving my 'business' card I went back, packed my bag and went to Emma's place to have a proper couchsurf experience.

In the evening went to a local bar called ' New Life' where there was a Serengeti Premium Lager promotion event with music and dancing. The highlight was when 4 guys (of which 3 dressed up as girls with skirts) performed 'Barbie Girl' from Aqua. Really funny to see 4 Africans performing this silly European song haha..

Next day it was time to be the tourist and we (Emma, Jonathan, Jari, me) went to the Isimili Stone Age site. A place where they found human remains from thousands of years back. We went with Max's car (Tanzanian guy who gave us a lot of beer the night before) and looked around for quite some time since it was really beautiful, see pictures. I also managed to climb up the big pillars which was quite the challenge.

In the afternoon booked the bus ticket, moved back to the Kili Lodge and prepared for the Friday night in Iringa Went to the same places again but because it was Friday night it was packed. Talked with an American guy, Australian guy and some British (and a Malaysian) girls. Had a good night until 5.30 am (!) and got the bus at 11 am. Not the best preparation for a 5 hour bus ride packed with Tanzanians but to skip a Friday party night is worse :)

CHOLE FOXES LODGE

Welcome to Chole Foxes Lodge. Situated on the beautiful island of Chole, this is the only place in the Mafia Island Marine Park where you can enjoy a relaxing holiday at a reasonable price.

All our rooms are self contained, with twin beds, bucket showers and toilet. Situated on an unmodified beach, nestled amongst the mangroves, this is a fabulous place to relax and watch the sun set over neighbouring Mafia Island. The natural break in the mangroves provides direct access to a secluded beach, from which it is possible to enjoy a cooling dip at high tide.

During the evenings, why not enjoy a moonlight barbeque of freshly caught fish under the stars.
