Three nights and two days of hiking and camping fun at NC's most-visited state park. This is the area of NC known as Andy Griffith land. Instead of Pilot Mountain, think Mt. Pilot. About 20 miles away is Mt. Airy, the town that claims to be the inspiration for Mayberry.
We pretty much had this campground to ourselves although we did run across other hikers and a pair of rock climbers on the trails. The first day we hiked the Grindstone trail (moderate) up to the summit of Pilot Mountain, about 5 miles round-trip. The second day was the Ledge Springs trail, a moderate to strenuous trail, up to Little Pinnacle where we had a great view of the Pilot Mountain summit, known as Big Pinnacle.
Braddock loved hiking, especially when he had to climb the steeper sections of the trails. A natural climber. And when we got back to the RV, he passed out within minutes, but he looked very content!
Weather was perfect, grilling every night and sleeping with the windows open.
