Entrance to Alpine Loop "Back Country Byway"
Jeep Libery odometer reads 12475.....Time: 9:30 AM
Town of Ouray, CO. (Elevation is 7706)

We are headed to Silverton via the four-wheel drive road over mountain peaks, near lakes, and along rock cliffs. Pretty exciting!!! It's a beautiful day here in Colorado!!! We started out taking the high road to Silverton, but we ran into a couple from Arizona and they had turned around before reaching California Pass (Elevation 12,930). They had trouble due to snow. We stayed on the lower road and reached Silverton at 12:00 PM.

We had a BBQ sandwich and talked to some people who were surprized about the snow on California Pass. (?) We decided to drive to Animas Forks (elevation 11,200), which is a mining ghost town from 1883. Some of the buildings are still standing, but with serious decay.

After meandering around the ghost town, which by the way we didn't see any, we decided to try another dirt road to get over the California Pass. We really wanted to reach this peak, because it's the highest point, of course. We didn't have any trouble. There was some snow..but not impassable.

We arrived back to Ouray at approximately 3:30 PM
We traveled a total of 45 miles today in 6 hours. NOT BAD!!!!
