Departing odometer 24621...arriving odometer 24737.
We only drove 116 miles today but it took several hours, due to the steep grades and switchbacks here in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. The scenery is beautiful with the Aspen trees in full color right now. We got in the Jeep and hit the dirt road for a while today to the top of Imogene Pass. Tomorrow we plan to do some four-wheeling on a dirt road that tops out at 13,200 feet (Campbell Peak) and winds thru Corkscrew Gulch to Silverton, an old silver mining town. I think its about 25 miles, but will take approx. 2-1/2 hours to get there. This is one of Don Carter's Famous Shortcuts!!!! Keep in mind that if you drove there on highway 550 you could reach Silverton in about one hour. Of course, the scenery would not be the same, but the ride a lot smoother!!! Last year we rode on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad to Silverton...what a great ride that was!!!

Check the next entry to see how the trip to Silverton turns out!!!!
