Arrived at Avignon (population 90,000) and were greeted with sunny skies and another walled city. We stayed within the walls of old Avignon which houses a population of 13,000. We used Avignon as a home base for 4 nights and 3 days and toured the surrounding area.
We truly enjoyed Avignon as there is so much to do including hiking, biking, walking, viewing historical Roman Ruins, Art Galleries and just plain relaxing. It would be easy to spend several weeks in Avignon to just enjoy the area. It was quite cool while we were there ~ probably about 10 degrees. I guess that's the price you pay when you travel off season to avoid the huge tourist crowds. Our time was rushed as usual as we must keep moving ahead on our trip but it was well worth the stop in Avignon.
Avignon was temporary home to the papacy from 1309 - 1377. Seven French Popes succeeded each other in Avignon during this timeframe.
