We arrived late into Paris (8:00 p.m.). Our hotel room had a peek-a-boo view of the Eiffel Tower all lit up - Henry was just thrilled!! We unloaded our backpacks and headed to see the tower. It looked like it was close - but it was deceiving as the tower is MONSTEROUS in size. We walked several kilometers before we actually reached it - the tower really is quite something to see!! We took the elevator to the top and wanted to walk down but the wind was blowing quite hard and it was SNOWING so everything was closed off. SNOWING in Paris - just a reminder of home!!
The following day we toured the Louvre - Henry did remarkably well and was quite taken with the size of the site and the contents. I took the Rick Steve's Europe 2008 book and it walked us through the Louvre in such an efficient manner only putting emphasis on key important items such as Mona Lisa, sculptures such as Venus de Milo, the Winged Victory etc. Afterwards we walked through Tuilleries Garden and the length of Champs-Elysees to the Arc du Triomphe.
Day 2 included a Rick Steve's walking tour through the historic quarter which included sites such as the Notre Dame and Sainte Chapelle churches, the latin quarter, surrounding area and sites. Again these self guided walking tours were great in getting us in and out of an area by describing what was important to see, giving us a bit of history/background and then we had time for lunch/cafe etc. It was such an efficient way to see such a large city and we didn't have to pay a tour/bus guide.
Paris is extremely expensive, something we were not prepared for - but it was worth the expense seeing the city of lights!!
