Well, how time flies when you're having fun! 6 weeks since my last entry and preparing for jetting off again. I wouldn’t call my time in Ghana "fun" but it is not punishment either. My positive attitude NY resolution has lasted a while longer than normal and I feel good about the year to come. Knowing that the construction project will conclude this year and the culmination of effort will come to fruition is something to be enthusiastic about. I’ve had some discussions with work about where to next and while nothing is cemented in, there are opportunities that I’m keen to learn more about and it’s always good to get praised for what you do. So, from a work point of view I’ve had a busier and better swing than most. I’ve been a hermit on Sunday’s and not even left the confines of my room – microwave food is my saviour. Having that one day away from everything and everyone is great for my state of mind and this bigger room with all its extra features make chilling on a Sunday that much more comfortable. Not saying that I wouldn’t go on a Sunday outing, but it’s been good to not have to socialise with the people you work with 24/7.

This swing saw another overseas Australia Day for me. Last year was on safari in Kenya, this year was at the wet mess bar until 10pm when someone had the great idea of piling into a van and all of us heading down to the Beige Resort/Club. On arrival, it was clear we’d made a mistake – the place was deserted, the beers warm, and terrible music pumping loudly through distorted speakers. But at least we were allowed out of camp. Soon after Aust Day, the community got upset over employment opportunities and blocked roads and generally protested, which caused a lock-down in camp where no one was allowed to leave/arrive for a week. All was safe and at least work could continue cause we are now inside the construction site versus the previous time this happened and we were at Exploration Camp or off-site residences. Not much progress from a construction point of view tho.

Planning this next break has consumed so much more of my down-time than I intended. The Caribbean has sooooo many choices. I’m not good with choice, so maybe the Maldives was a better option for my mental state, but nah it will be good regardless. My selection process was a lesson in textbook Ross – Cancun, Mexico because of a World Wonder (the Mayan Ruins); Grace Bay beach in Providenciales island in the nation of Turks & Caicos because it’s mentioned in the CNN Top 10 Beaches of the World; and Jamaica because it is a world-famous Caribbean destination and the beach town of Negril is number 1 rated place on Trip Advisor for Caribbean places. So, I go with what pop culture tells me to do. And I’m cool with that. It’s been my guide through all my travels so far and served me well.

So, I fly out Tuesday night to New York City for my connection to Cancun. I hope that Cancun is not as smoggy as it is here. The so called 'harmattan’ season is in full force during the dry months and smoke/haze/dust fills the air which caused me a sore throat for about a week during the really bad period – worse than Beijing I’m sure! Most of us are wishing for a light rain to just clear the air. When I get back, the wet season will likely be starting and this thick air will hopefully be gone.

Oh I almost forgot...the reason for the title. I bought a wide-brim hat in Mikonos during my first ever break and have taken it on every break since. But I noticed soon after returning from Perth that a serious case of fungal mould had overtaken my hat and was spreading to another hat. Really grose. So I ditched the hat in my rubbish bin. A couple of days later I was walking through camp and spotted a male Ghanaian cleaner wearing my mouldy hat!! I laughed and walked by thinking “good luck with that”......
