In exactly 2 weeks tonight I will be on a plane for my 6th R&R break. This time to USA and Canada. First stop is Los Angeles where I've just booked a trashy little motor inn in central Hollywood on Sunset Blvd. The sights of LA are very spread out, but most I want to see is in that area and then I’ll join up with my friends who will be in Long Beach for a conference. All flights are now booked. I’ll head from LA to Quebec City, Canada, where the max avg temp is 4C and into the negatives overnight. I feel like I will regret this portion of the trip because I hate the cold, but it is all because of my strong desire to see Niagara Falls and if I’m up that way I may as well explore the nearby sights. It’s been a while since I’ve had a mostly spontaneous trip, so this one will be it!

Last week the site was shut down for a few days when community members started "agitations" which we would call protesting. The so called 'youth’ (which is more a term for people of working age) were protesting over the lack of local employment and blockading the entry to the construction site. It meant a few days in lock down at the exploration camp. All was safe, but just couldn’t leave the camp compound. It is a complex issue, and yet to be fully resolved but hopefully doesn’t drag on too long. I actually liked working from my room for those few days.

This Monday was “Happy Hour” social drinks before the Tuesday public holiday of Independence Day. A fun night at camp and good to mingle outside of the office with some of the Ghanaians. Although the music is stupidly loud and it can be a bit feral. The remainder of the week was quiet and the highlight was finally working out the perfect synchronisation strategy for the contacts between my phone, work computer, personal laptop and Hotmail. Anyone who knows me well, knows that organisation is a cornerstone of my daily routine and ever since I’ve got this new phone, I’ve been uncomfortable not having my contacts, tasks, notes and calendar centralised. So I’m happy now. Plus when you’re stuck here for 6 weeks straight, it is the small things like this that keep you occupied. I ticked over a month on site this week and I think that is about my mental limit!

Congrats to my bestie Bri on the birth of Oliver :-)

Interesting Ghana Observations: my graduate staff member is only 4 years younger than me and was shocked when I told him this – they seem to start uni late here; a labourer worker gets paid the equivalent of about 70 cents per hour; I heard a Celine Dion ringtone at work and had to laugh when a guy answered the phone.
