I just had to have that as my title. I am now a few days into my time in Houston with my friend Amy. The flight to New York was good. I had an Economy Comfort Seat, which is a cross between business and normal economy. No additional cost, but an extra 50% leg-room and recline. Able to get some sleep before touching down in NYC at about 530am local time so it was dark. People had warned me about the JFK airport being the worst in the US to enter thru, but it was really simple and trouble-free. Immigration was well signed and organised, clean too. No custom checks on my luggage. I had a full 5 hrs until my flight to Houston. Had to walk up to another terminal for check-in to this flight. Lots of queues, and full security screening to get into that terminal – some strange full body scan. I prefer this tho to the invasive pat-downs that I received when leaving Ghana – I felt violated after that experience. I explored the airport and got some breakfast – no McDonalds to be found tho! What?! I'm still yet to get a fix for my Big Mac and Cheeseburger craving.

Flying into Houston was a good view of the city. Greener than I thought, massive freeways, dotted high-rise buildings around a cluster of sky-scrappers. Amy picked me up from the airport and we had a bit of a drive about before heading to her apartment. Really nice new complex with pools, gym, etc. We went out for drinks and dinner on that first night (Friday). Went to an improv comedy performance, which was...different! nah, it was good. Met up with a few of Amy’s Houston friends – Aussies, Canadians.

On the Saturday, we got lost driving down to the USS Texas – a warship built over a 100 yrs ago and now a floating museum. Very interesting to wander about the ship and just to get out and see more of Houston and my first time in the USA or any part of the Americas. Went to a restaurant and club on Saturday night. The club left me with ringing in my ears for a day and half after – my ears are not used to this loud music thing. Met some more people – all really welcoming and friendly, including Ben who we are going to Vegas with. I ordered a sirloin steak, which was ok (bit rarer than what I prefer), but good to get some decent meat into my system.

Sunday, we headed with Ben to Ihop for an American breakfast and then got lost driving to the Discount Outlet Shopping. Houston is very spread out, so u have to drive anywhere and it is a lot of kms to get anywhere...especially if u drive for 45 mins in the wrong direction. Hahaha. The shops were good, but we got rained on. Then we went to see 'Captain America’ at the cinema. 3/5 movie, but good to go to the movies...and to see that movie when in America!

Monday was my day of relaxation. Amy went off to work, I slept til 11am. Walked down the road in 40C heat to get my haircut – it had that feral out-of-Africa look. Then lazed by the pool and generally relaxed. When Amy got home, we drove out to Fry’s, a massive beyond belief electronic store. I bought a Nintendo 3DS, which I have been looking at for a few months to keep me entertained in all this travel that I do. We then met up with the others for dinner at Chuy’s – a tex mex restaurant. Really good food and a margarita to boot.

It is good to be here. Reminds me a lot of Australia. A couple more days in Houston to relax, before flying out on Wed night to Vegas baby...yay.
