This week I booked my flights to Houston for my 2nd break! Not a place that most people would have on their hit list (and definitely not in the heat of summer!), but I am especially going so I can visit my good friend Amy and see her life since moving there for work from Perth in February. We're thinking of heading to Florida (Orlando/Miami) for one of the weekends and then I’ll go to New York City when she returns to Houston. I should have at least 4 days in NYC before flying back to Accra. The US of A has not been high on my travel wish list for various reasons, but I am excited about this trip to catch up with Amy and see some different places. Flying out on the 12th August yipppeeeee.

A relatively busy work week with consultants visiting from the US and then finalising mid-yr performance reviews. Lots of field time too. I’ve included some photos of the resettlement site that we are building to house the people affected by the mine construction. I find it very interesting.

Went to a bar down the road with the consultants on Wed night. Boring place, but good to get out and talk to other people. I always feel like I talk a million miles an hour when there are visitors because I have to speak quite slow to Ghanaians so they understand my accent. So it was good to be able to chat at normal pace and about life beyond Ghana.

Saturday night was an outing to a contractors housing compound in Ntranang. About a 15 min bus trip. It was a wet night, but they had a great set up with massive speakers, roast pork (no thanks), keg beer, nibbles and lots of people. I didn’t dance, but a lot of people did and there were local kids peering in through the front security gates watching us party. Funny. Ghanaians love to dance...and will do it sober. I was in the gym and this guy was practising his dance moves in front of the mirror. Odd. Plus his dance moves were shite. Left the party about 10pm. Was tempted to stay, but they ran out of Jim Beam and they were trying to pull me on the dancefloor. Um, no. Plus, the bus was leaving and I would be stranded there which I didn’t particularly want to deal with.

Oh and I got my first piece of mail from home! A birthday card from the Fairhead’s which was really cool aside from the fact that the card implies that I’m an alcoholic ;-)
