What I did
One of the guys that I shared with on the Greece tour was also in Sorrento at the same time, so I arranged to meet up with him for dinner on my first night, which was good. Nice food and a busy main square to do a lot of people watching.
My first full day was just one of relaxation – slept in, read by the pool, admired the view. I wandered around the many tourists shops in the evening, but not really into buying much (it's not like I have a house to decorate anymore!)
I missed the ferry back to Sorrento because the bus from Ravello to Amalfi didn’t show up. So that was a waste of 14 euro cause I’d already paid for the return ticket. I had to get the 1.5 hr bus. I really am sick of catching transport and worrying about whether it will show up, be delayed or not arrive on time. Looking forward to a return to routine actually. However Sorrento and the Amalfi coast does have more to offer and explore (e.g. Capri), so I might come back...maybe combine it with Sicily.
I journeyed from Sorrento via Naples back to Rome to catch my flight to Ghana. 3 trains. It was odd being in Rome. Of course I didn’t see any sights other than the train station. The reason it was so odd was because when I was last at this train station I was stressed to the max
Alitalia really is a crap airline. The boarding process was excruciating to watch. I was fortunate to be in an emergency aisle seat, so had heaps of leg room. The flight was 90% African travellers and man do they take a lot of carry-on luggage. Seriously, some of their carry-on bags were larger than my checked-in suitcase. And they are all trying to cram it into the overhead lockers. I said to one American woman that it would be funny...if we weren’t on an aircraft. Then there was the stopover in Lagos, Nigeria. I don’t know why, but I was worried about this. In the end, it was fine. Passengers continuing on to Ghana stayed on the plane while they cleaned it and then loaded it up with a full load of new passengers. I realised that the flight goes to Ghana and then back to Rome. On the 1 hr short flight from Lagos to Accra I sat next to a priest.
I think next break will be less travelling and more time in one place. But I’m very glad that I got to see Greece and some of southern Italy. My highlights of this trip were catching up with Tish and Keiran in Monaco and the Greek Island of Santorini. I type this entry while on the 4 hr trip back to site from Accra. Getting my mind ready for 6 weeks of work and catching up on the happenings of the past 3 weeks. Here we go....................................
