First week down!! I asked during the week if there was any chance to move up from the housing compound to the main camp. The need to get a driver between places was becoming very frustrating and the facilities down there aren't ideal. Luckily, the HR Manager was able to source me a room in the main camp! So, in a rush on Friday arvo I was told to go get my stuff (with the help of a driver) and bring it up to my new room. The room was previously occupied by a consultant who comes to site only 2 weeks a month or something like that. So, he has been moved down to my old room and I’ve moved into his. He is off-site at the moment, so apparently he has been told via email...will be interesting when he gets to site and his reaction, but I think it is fairer for me to be up here.

The room is about the same size as my old one, but it has hot water that lasts more than 3 minutes, a towel rail that doesn’t fall off the wall when u brush passed, a new closet, a desk, mosquito net, bar fridge, and a working television (with DSTV, which is similar to foxtel)! This is heaven compared to what I had and I’m much happier. Funny tho; for my first visit to Akyem back in October 2010, I was in this cell block and didn’t like it – I wanted to be at Jolithas down the road. Funny how perspective can change your opinion. This new room tho has a double bed, whereas the one in October was a single. The only down-side is the noise from everyone walking down the corridor in the morning. There are 10 rooms in this block, and v thin walls, so on Sunday I was hoping for a sleep-in but woken up by noise and the cleaners going in and out of rooms. Plus the shower-head is possessed by the devil and flips around when the water pulsates through. But I don’t complain because the benefits much outweigh the negatives.

Work-wise it was a busy week. Out in the field almost everyday with the guys I’m working with to check on construction and the clearing works. Getting up to speed with what’s changed since last visit and meeting new people. Also had the Induction and getting myself set-up. The overlap between me and the Operations Env Manager is much easier managed face to face now that I’m on-site and no time difference.

Set-up my desk on Saturday. It was perfect day to do it because I have to work Saturdays but the others don’t; so I had the office block all to myself and could play my music without headphones. Simple things make me happy! Also able to go thru my work emails and sort some stuff out. I’m yet to transfer to the Ghana server, so working off the Aus server is slow, but seemingly a second faster on weekends.

Went to the gym several times during the week. Simple relatively small gym, but good that they even have one. An Australian guy from Ahafo (the other Newmont site in Ghana) was over for a few days and he shared our office; we had drinks Wed night at the wet mess and even went into town for a drink at a 'spot’ (bar). Not somewhere I think I would go often, but good to get out and see real life. They served my scotch & coke in a white wine glass! And there was this huge Michael Jackson poster on the wall.

The food is good, but not much in the way of salad. I’m trying to eat a variety to maintain some vitamins etc. Some people take vitamin pills to fulfil dietary needs, but I don’t really want to do this. Plus, there is a lot of pork on the menu and I don’t really like pork anymore. There is a BBQ every Saturday night in the wet mess, and this would be the best food night with some tasty steaks and garlic bread. Couple that with cheap Ghanaian beer (called Star) and Saturday nights are pretty good.

I’m still bummed that I missed Angry Boys, but will wait patiently for the dvd. But I did hear that West Coast beat Frem in the derby, so that’s good. On that note...
