Most people only visit Cambodia for the temples at Siem Reap (Angkor Wat), certainly unmissable, but we were keen to see something else in Cambodia. We had planned to visit a national park near the Thai border but with family in Siem Reap we headed further north to a town called Battambang. We were the only travellers on the packed bus, the 6 hours of broken air conditioning and overly loud Cambodian music would be our final such journey. Battambang is a typical Cambodian town surrounded by mountains and farmland, in wet season it must be incredibly lush, we had to put up with a mouth full of dust.
Near Battambang there is a redundant (French) single track railway, the locals have taken to using the line to deliver timber / fruit and veg etc between the villages via trains made of bamboo!! This has become a bit of a tourist draw too, so we thought we would give it a go. Jesus…….2 axils, strapped to a timber deck of bamboo with what looks like a motor bike engine attached hurtles along the twisted and buckled track…..lord knows how they stay on. If you meet one coming the other way, they eventually decide to slow down to a stop, you jump off and one train is dismantled to let the other one past. Once is enough, especially with bowels that are a little sensitive.
The next day we headed to a nearby hill top village for a great view across the farmland…although it was a little too hot for this sort of thing. I was not so keen on the monkeys running around everywhere either (although Catherine fell in love with the cute youngsters).
