After an early morning start that saw us leaving Ptuj at 8am, we arrived in Maribor just after 9:30am, finding me a nice hostel to dump my bags, we went off in search for a couple of alcoholic bevies prior to Leannes train to Graz at 10:30...
We stumbled into a cafe and sheepishly ordered two beers - not so unusual for eastern europe where everyone seems to have a beer for breakfast (much like how we savour our caffeine fix first thing in the morning...). We weren't too sure that what we got was actually what we ordered, but we hung around for one more round before walking to the station.
Noting that Leannes train was running 20mins late, we settled into the cafe/bar at the station and proceeded to have a couple more rounds before her train actually arrived, ensuring that we were both pissed before 10:30am...
I wandered back to my hostel, called Leanne about 30mins later to make sure she was awake (and didn't miss her stop) and then proceeded to crash out til the afternoon...
The following day I did some exploring of the town centre which didn't take too long, I then climbed the small hill behind the city that used to support a palace, but now only contains a small shrine/chapel and in the late afternoon. I took a bus to the neighbouring village of Ribnisko and caught the cable car up the mountain and took a tobaggin back down...
Maribors greatest claim is that it is home to the oldest vine in the world... (world record - it's 400yrs old!!)
