It rained today. I guess we've been lucky so far with the weather but I think the rain is supposed to be following us south to L.A. over the next two days :(. Anyways, we started the day with a huge breakfast. Fry up and stack of pancakes. Yum! Then we hit the road and headed south.

We spent about 20 mins looking for a way to turn on the back windscreen wipers before we realised we don't actually have a back windscreen wiper. Weird.

This part of highway 1 going south of Big Sur is really bendy and hilly. There's a sheer 100m drop along the right side of the road and this morning all we could see was white. I'm driving through a cloud of fog and mist, and I know the Pacific is below to the right of me but I can't see it. I dare not go more than 35 mph. I'm slightly concerned there's another 100 miles to our next stop...

About half an hour in to the drive the fog started to clear and the rain became more of a drizzle. We stopped about 20 times to take photos of the scenery, hundreds of shots of pretty much the same scene, we just can't get enough of it! At one stop, YouTube "sensation" Lonnie Campbell (man who sings with a rabbit on his head) introduced me to his bunny Gandalf and talked to me about fishing whilst Emily hid in the car. We made a hasty retreat.

Eventually the road began to straighten and level out. More green fields. The rain stopped. We saw Hearst castle in the distance but coming from the U.K., we've seen older and grander castles so we kept on driving. The only other thing we want to stop for before our final destination today, are elephant seals.

A beach filled with what looked like over stuffed sausages wobbling to and from the water, but mostly just vegging out in the sand. They are mostly female elephant seals that have had pups recently so they are actually at their slimmest at this time of year! They lose about a third of their body weight having their pup and feeding it. It's an incredible sight, probably one I'll never see again, so we spent a while there. A few squirrels also tried to capture everyone's attention by posing for pictures.

The rest of the drive is uneventful. San Luis Obispo is where we are staying tonight, at the Peach Tree Inn. A cute little hotel. The dark clouds have followed us though. The town's website says that this is " the happiest place in America". I'm not sure about that. Perhaps because it's spring break there doesn't seem to be many people here at all and no one seems especially happy. Maybe the weather is making it seem more sad and miserable too. Dinner at the Big Sky Café was nice, we both decided to be healthy and have salads (and a side of fries)!
