14th Aug - Checked out the 'Blue Lake' in Mt Gambier - just a lake - and set off. Stopped at Logan's Beach as this is a whale hotspot. Sure enough, there were two whales frollicking in the bay. However, it didn't quite have the same feel. There were about 30 or so people there, all on a man made wooden decking structure lookout. There was even a guy surfing a few hundred metres away from the whales. They did however, perform some almighty jumps, which we had not seen yet, so this was pretty cool. Stayed in Appollo Bay for the night.
15th Aug - Did the Great Ocean Road. There's something to see every 2-300 metres, so we were in and out of the car like yo-yo's. Bit like going to Durdle Door, over and over again. A rock sticking out of the water here and there. An 'astonishing' piece of coastline here, all generally looked the same. The 12 apostles were not quite as amazing as we imagined them to be, but then, what is so great about rocks poking out of the water???
Got to Melbourne and stayed on a shit campsite. Spent the day in the city, riding around on the free trams and mosying around all the arty sculptures, my favourite being "the cow in a tree". Quite liked the feel of Melbourne. Much prefer it to Sydney. Went down to the docks to enquire about getting to Tasmania. We were horrified to find out that the price we thought it would be, actually had to be doubled, because the price we were previously quoted was only for a one-way ticket. Shocker. Mike was desperate to go and we had been looking forward to it for ages, so we whacked it on the credit card and will consider the consequences later! We booked to leave tomorrow on the night crossing. A whopping 11 hours.
