Hey all,
we've moved slightly south now- to Childers- a lovely little town with only one street and three pubs. We've had to come up to the 'big smoke' Bundaberg to use proper internet :) After a lot of faffing around in Bundaberg (stupid Harvest Hotline) and still no work, we were told there was work in Childers, so came back down south and settled in a sort of 'working peoples' caravan park. Everyone there (backpackers of various nationalities) is fruit picking and the woman who owns the place (english funnily enough) finds you work. The caravan park is gorgeous- it's on about 67 acres of bush just outside Childers, so theres a lot of personal space between tents, an enormous communal camp kitchen/shed/drinking area, and we share the place with numerous wildlife- wallabies, treefrogs, cane toads, lizards, possums, some psycho geese, and hundreds of incredibly loud birds- which both wake us up at 4am every morning (damn kookaburras) and eat anything we leave out in the kitchen. After four more days of doing nothing but beaching, following the Bundaberg beach theme, we got work picking zucchinis. For the first three days, this really sucked. Ive never worked so hard in my life, and all for only $15 an hour (!!!!) by the end of the first day i honestly thought i was crippled for life and that my back would never function again. Thankfully it did eventually get better. By the fifth day (6am starts, 12-3pm finishes) we were almost old pros...then we all got laid off. Luckily, Rick has managed to get some tree planting work and it looks like im a lady of leisure for a time. The only good thing about being fired is that we got a day off today- yay!- and managed to sleep in 'til 8am before the tent began roasting us. So, we're off to the beach. Heading to nearby Snake Farm on Sunday to hold a crocodile! Hope you're all well.
Lots of love,
Mel and Rick xx
