We found that the treasures in Florence are on the inside of the many buildings here. Today we toured the Uffizi, and the Accademia, where we enjoyed works by Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Botticelli and many other Renaissance masters. The portraits and busts of important people of the past lined the walls of these museums.. the restoration of these pieces are spectacular and you can just get close enough to appreciate the brush strokes on Botticelli's Birth of Venus or Rembrandt's Self Portrait.

The crowd pleaser at Accedemia was Michaelangelo's David. This beautiful marble creation stands pensively at the end of a corridor lined by Michelangelo's other sculptures "unfinished" pieces, body forms coming out of blocks of marble, as if under construction for all of us, today, to see. David is a great piece of art, the detail of the hands, etc really do exhibit why Michelangelo was the best.

The Ponte Vecchio was a sight in itself, an "old bridge" which has been the home to many jeweler shops, flanked on both sides since the 16th century. Even the Nazis found this bridge to be to beautiful and chose not to blow it up in an effort to slow the Allied forces, but blew up the buildings and bridges further down the Arno river.

Today it still houses jewelers and the windows are filled with silver and gold, watches and precious stones. Perhaps too much yellow gold for us, but still a sight to take in.

We may not have purchased jewelry on this old bridge, but not to worry, shopping in Florence is superb, we've found some silk and leather goods to bring home with us.

We enjoyed dinner at Osteria della Olio and met an older couple from the Portofino area. They knew as much English as we knew Italian, so it made for a very fun and interesting challenge as we talked about our trip and our meals and exchanged phone numbers and email. The Cavellini's live in Santa Magherita, a stop we will make in 6 days.. and we do plan on meeting up with them for muscato.
