The journey up to the top of Whistler mountain is loooong. It was a great day for a gondola ride though because the sky was clear and the mountains are quite green right now. Snow is clinging to the very peaks of the mountains but below that everything is very lush. We traveled up the mountain with a bunch of Whistler/Blackcomb employees so we quietly listened to the gossip while enjoying the scenery. We heard that 5 bears had already been spotted on the mountain from the gondola so we scanned the hillside as we went up but didn't see any movement except for the mountain bikers
Finally at the top, we stopped in the lodge for a hot drink, warm food and a great view. We sat on the panorama patio and looked out at Blackcomb and the valley between the two mountains. While we were having lunch Wolfi saw his first Canadian wildlife - a chipmunk. Followed by another chipmunk. One of them was breaking apart an M&M for the peanut in the middle. The other one was begging at the tables. Cute pair.
On our way again we took our next gondola ride. I guess this one is officially the PEAK 2 PEAK as it took us from the top of Whistler to the top of Blackcomb. The view was fantastic! But still no bears to be seen. On Blackcomb's peak there wasn't much to do since we had already had our midday meal so we walked around briefly before taking the gondola back to Whistler. This time we got in the glass-bottom gondola which was interesting but what had my attention more was the fact that we were stopped in the middle of the line, hanging 436 metres above the shallow river winding its way through the valley far below. And I had a great look at all this through the glass-bottom of the gondola. We sat for several minutes. An announcement was made that there was nothing to worry about and we would be moving soon in a few minutes. I felt fortunate that if there was a problem we were at least close enough to a tower to climb out of the gondola roof and onto the tower where we could make the long climb down the ladder
From Whistler peak we took the very long gondola ride back down to the Village. It seemed to go faster on the way down.
Back in the Village we went fairly directly back to the car and set out on our journey home. This time we managed to stop at a few of the scenic viewpoints I had missed on the way up, but once again I missed the Chief viewpoint. Nuts!
