Where I stayed
Kouchibouguac National Park

We travelled down the very bumpy Acadian seaside route through to the National Park for the night. Partly in keeping with our quest to see the national parks, but also because it was a nice place to stay just outside of Moncton and the easy (and short) trip into Moncton the next day would give us some extra time to explore the small communities along the way. One stop we made was to an artisan soap maker, oliviersoaps.com, where I bought a bar of scrubbing laundry soap (amazing stuff) and some bar soaps that came in small painted boxes. All of it was made of natural ingredients and essential oils so the smells were soft and not in the least overwhelming. They have a website so I may be visiting their store again! We settled in the national park, once again on the shore. The beach near the campsite though was inaccessible and the mosquitoes were ravenous, so we returned back to the trailer to add a layer of Watkins repellent and to pile into Flavio to make the quick trip down the road to the sand dune beaches. Just in time for a walk down the boardwalk and a bit of play on the beach before the sun hit the horizon. I dipped my toes in the water and was surprised at how warm it was. Not the Atlantic mind you, but its pretty close. Later, we met up with Marilyn and Harvey, a retired couple who stopped to talk after noticing that we too were from BC. We were the first BC natives they’d seen since they left Alberta – the same could be said on our side. Since leaving BC the foreign plates have diminished significantly and we feel very much like one of only a few people traveling this time of year. Turns out they live in Maple Ridge on a couple of acres that are threatened by development just like Roy and Jean’s – amazing parallels there. They were kind enough to share their firewood with us and even set up at our fire pit for the evening so we could put the girls to bed and not have to leave the site. A few hours of reminiscing on the stops we’ve shared, some of the amazing experiences and fantastic people we’ve met raced by and soon it was nearing 11. We had an early start the next day so we said good night and wondered if we would meet up with them again – they were sharing the same general agenda, planning a stop in PEI next. Jeff and I both were energized though and sat down to a rousing rematch of crib (I got skunked the last time). I managed to redeem myself and one fair and square by about 6 points. The ladies slept well after a good afternoon of play and fresh air (so did we!) and rose early enough that we were on our way to Moncton quickly the next morning.

Love the self portrait! I would have thought a lot of people would be travelling to see the beautiful fall colors. Enjoy.
