After two weeks in Rio we were spent. The city looked like a war zone and I just craved some peace and quiet.

We went to look to escaped to Florianopolis an 18hr bus journey from Rio and the surfing Mecca of Brazil. We were shocked to find that the bus was $96, but we were soon to learn that all bus travel in Brazil is expensive. We booked semi-cama, which turned out to be super-comfy reclining chairs with footrests.
Unfortunately, I got the short straw and ended up next to a mother an child sharing the seat, which meant I had a small child kicking me for 18hrs, I was not best pleased.

Summary of Florianopolis: our hostel was pretty crap (it was cheap though; $16 a night 6bed) it's redeeming factors being; the guests and the isolated location. The island has 48 beautiful beaches, ranging from Ibiza style clubbing beach towns to empty and deserted . I learnt to surf and we also did a day hike to a waterfall and a beach. One day we ended up in a Bloco after relaxing with a few beers in Cento, then another we were caught up in chaos from protests. We truly kicked back and relaxed.

We spent five nights here before hot footing it to The Iguazu falls.
