After breakfast the next morning we packed up and left the hostel deciding to hitch to Invercargill rather than Mannapouri. I stuck my thumb out to begin with but waited for ages. After about 30 minutes I passed the responsibility to Amy, where the first car stopped straight away. She has a magic thumb. The guy was heading to Queenstown so he said he could tak us a bit of the way to the main road, although he didn't really take us that far, so we decided to hitch a little further before going straight to Invercargill.
After another magic thumb moment a woman who saw us in Te Anau picked us up and took us as far as Five Rivers. From there we got a trip straight to the city which is, yet again, lucky on our part! We were dropped off not too far from the hostel Amy had stayed in before so we went there to book a room for the night. The reception was out for a few hours so we dropped our stuff and went to the Southland Museum.
The museum was quite interesting with a lot of Maori history and an art gallery. It also has a section full of Tuatara, a lizard that is endangered. There was one called Henry who they think was born in the 19th century. Pretty impressive! After this we went to the nearby Queens Park.
Queens Park is basically a big Botanic Garden with an aviary and a little zoo section with a few animals. The pictures has a lot of what we saw, including a little Wallaby! That night I cooked some Lamb for us because Amy was wanting to try it. Long story short, I can cook :) lovely asparagus! We got talking to a Canadian in the hostel and got a few good tips about...well, our next destination!
