Where I stayed
Rosita Bungalow
We are up and ready by 7 but no sign of the guides. When they arrive a few minutes late, they are surprised to find that we have stowed our bags in the unlocked van. We drive to the smart-looking university area on the outskirts of Kandy before setting off. We plod through small villages, gently climbing. Mid morning we stop in a friendly little restaurant and pick up "lunch packets": packed lunches of fried rice, for later. I film the man making roti: similar to samosas. Another big climb up a hillside road. We're starting to get into tea country again. The road surface is dreadful and that contributes to our fatigue. We go down and up ending up with a steep and seemingly unrelenting climb in blistering heat. We pull in by a river and enjoy our packed lunch perched on stones in the shade. Off again, grinding up the steep climb. Janice gets in the van after about 55km and I join her 5km later. It is frustrating as we were only about 4km from the top but I was overheating in the direct sun I had climbed 750m, 600m in the last 7km.. I stayed in the van for the next 10km descent until we pulled into our destination, the Rosita Bungalow, a house on a tea plantation that was reminiscent of the 1920s. It comes complete with cook and possibly over attentive butler. I am restored by a beer on the lawn. We relax and have a curry and rice dinner sat at a large oval dining table similar to our own one at home.
