I have been in Apollo Bay since the 22nd and finally things are for the most part going really well!! I have some steady work at the bakery and I'm right on the ocean. Christmas was really quite rough though. It felt strange to be alone and I was really homesick and not very happy for a few days. A week stretch of clouds and rain had me wondering if this was really summer at all. I again considered flying home but I am happy to say that as of right now I am really enjoying myself again! It is so nice to be working again! I work at the Great Ocean Road Fish and Loaves Bakery in  the front as a server, and also in the back slicing bread. I have picked up quite a few extra shifts and today actually worked for almost 9 hours (5am-1:30)!! Yes you are reading this correctly- I start work at 5 am- the sun's not yet up but I am!  Apollo Bay is  a nice little town with a population of about 1000 in the winter and 10,000 in the summer. The main street is super busy with people all day long (most of them coming into the bakery it seems) ;) and all necessary amenities are nearby, including the beach- yes , I have decided the beach is necessary :P
There's a nice little harbour in town where I have been swimming laps, and we're surrounded by  crashing waves on the other beaches- I can hear them from my room at night :) New Years was pretty fun;I spent the day swimming in the harbour and walking the shoreline and  I went out to the beach with some people I met here at the hostel and we had some drinks (apparently it's technically illegal, but the cops came by a few times just to make sure we were of age, then told us "you're not supposed to be drinking here", then left!) The foreshore (main beach and town area) is set up with a carnival right now that has been operating at night with rides and midway games. It was too expensive, so I didnt go on any rides, but it was interesting- a really different atmopsphere to New Years back home. there were two fireworks shows and since I had to work at 9am New Years Day I headed back home after midnight thinking I could get some sleep... well this hostel isnt really up to the standard I am used to, and there seem to be no enforced quiet rules- at any time of the night anywhere on the grounds.. I was woken up to people partying directly outside my window at 2 am when I told them I had to work and politely asked if they could move away from my window, the response was "Its new years, nobody cares" Then sometime between 2 and 3 am some of of my food was stolen  (P.S to whomever stole my unopened block of cheddar cheese- I hope you drunkenly ate it one sitting and are now horribly constipated!) at this point I decided I would be moving to the YHA hostel down the street as soon as possible! I last looked at my phone at 4 am- I had been up for 24 hours since I worked at 5 am that day.... work was rough to say the least!! I work againtomorrow and the next day, then have 2 days off. I'm thinkign of maybe going somewhere along the coast for the 2 nights but not sure yet. I don't  get paid until Sunday so I might just stick around here until I move to the YHA on the 6th. Super excited about that- its a brand new architecht designed eco friendly hostel!! Ive been in it and its super luxurious (relatively speaking of course) bit more expensive, but there is a price on a good night's sleep!
As for what will happen after this, i am not sure but I have 3 options. I have  applied to a job back home, and if it turns out that the timing works out and it is full time work, I will go home in February (cheapest flight goes through Honolulu!!) I can go back to Melbourne and start the coaching job for the one day a week it is offered for the first term, and look for another job during the week. Or I can find some sort of full time fruitpicking/ hospitality work elsewhere in Australia- i would like to continue along to South Australia and Western Australia. One of my must-sees is a little town on the Nullarbor Plains (Nullarbor because No Trees = desert) called Esperance- Ive read some beautiful white sand beaches there and want to go.... so no plans yet, just ideas... feeling adventurous again :)
