On the 11th I headed out from Palmwoods, 4 hours south on the train, through Brisbane to Coolangatta in the Gold Coast. I stayed 3 nights at the Coolangatta YHA in Bilinga, just a few blocks from the beach, and a 10 minute walk to the airport. The rainy weather continued the day I arrived, and I was wondering if I was ever going to see a real Aussie summer. Luckily my second day proved to be what I was hoping for, and I had a great day at Snapper Rocks and Rainbow Bay Beach. Intersetingly the NSW QLD border goes right through the middle of town, at one point, Tweed Heads NSW is on one side of the St and Coolangatta QLD is on the other. At this time of year since QLD doesn’t follow daylight savings time, this becomes particularly strange. One side of the street is an hour later than the other! The hostel operates a free shuttle to the beach, so I took it and was not disappointed- beautiful blue water, crashing waves along the rocks, and the high rises of surfers paradise in the distance. This is touted as one of the best places in Australia for surfing, and I was sad that I had sold my surfboard in Mooloolaba, but it was probably too advanced for me anyways- so I was content to watch the pros. The sun was super hot, but the humidity of the Sunshine coast was not there, so it was quite pleasant. I layed out for a few hours then walked along the headland to Point Danger, down into Tweed Heads, and just to be silly- stood with one foot in NSW and one foot in QLD. I had a few hours to kill at the Tweed Heads mall, and then the shuttle brought me back to the hostel.
That night something really bzarre happened. I woke up at 3 am and had to go to the bathroom, so I walk out the dorm door, and Im immeditalye greeted by several thousand flying bug thingys buzzing around me..I walked into ther bathroom and it was just like a hoard of locusts- thse bugs were crawling around, mating, fling into me, flying around the bathroom like crazy and even floating dead in the toilet!! In the mornign there were 10s of thousand of them dead in the showers and everywhere along the floor and in the toilets.. UCK!! the girl at reception said "welcome to Australia"... apparently this is a common occurance in Coolangatta?? Thats fine and all- but no one was in any hurry to clean them up.. adn they STUNK!! they ahd this horrible musky smell about them..a nd they sat there..dead in the bathroom until atleast noon, when I left... Welcome to Australia indeed?
