July 4
We woke up early to catch public transport out to the site of the Busabout pickup (another campsite). The morning went by quickly as we had an hour stopover in Pisa and had a chance to see the infamous Leaning Tower. It´s really strange that the city´s claim to fame is a tower that was built on a foundation of sand and is now a lesson to all those impetuous architects. Apparently the tower will one day fall, even though they have reinforced the base in recent years... what will Pisa do then? Maybe build a leaning bowling alley? Rebecca went into the cemetery that is a part of the complex of historical buildings. The most interesting part were some frescoes that have been preserved from the time of the Black Death. The artist who painted them is known to history only as "The Master of the Triumph of Death" and they are quite morbid, with people decomposing in caskets and being eaten by the Devil in hell. After this cheery stop we crossed the border into the beautiful territory of southern France. The scenery along the Mediterranean coast is amazing and the views as we entered Nice were quite stunning. We saw the royal palace of Monaco from the cliffs above, as well as the all-important casino. The population of Monaco is only about 6000, but for about a million dollars you can apply to join this select group. Michael Jackson apparently has been rejected about a dozen times! After we arrived in Nice we had the chance to walk down to the beach (aka stony shore) and walk in Vieux Nice, the nice part of the city. While it had some charm, it was nothing compared to Santorini, and we didn't mind that we were only spending the one night.
