Rano (morning) from Warsaw,

Just wanted to send a brief blog to just a few folks regarding a few funny stories/observations in Warsaw/Europe. First, we have noticed that pit bulls are the dog of choice in both the Czech Republic and Poland. We have seen so many pit bulls it's bizarre! In the Czech Republic we also saw a lot of short dogs of mixed breeds - it was strange (and a bit of doggie poop on the sidewalks). Also, many people would walk their dogs without leashes in CR. In Warsaw, most people have their dogs on leashes and the dogs don't seem so short. There are so many cute doggies and it's really hard not to pet them however, Europeans are not as welcoming to people petting their dogs as in the States. So, I admire them from afar.

Okay, so yesterday (Wednesday) Mike and I went to this awesome Polish restaurant for lunch. I was so glad because the waiter/owner spoke broken English. Anyway, the bill came and Mike and I were looking through it because it appeared a bit high. With the language barrier it was not worth trying to dispute so we paid it. Later on, I asked the owner of the place where we are staying about a charge we didn't recognize on the bill and he confirmed that it was a "tip". So we ended up double tipping this guy - and I thought he was so nice. Our new friend where we are staying confirmed that this "tip" was not fair and to not judge all Polish people by this unfair act. As Mike calls it - the American Dummy tax - hee, hee. Also, meals here are based on portion size (grams) so what is featured on the menu is not the full price. For example, when Mike ordered the perch, which appeared as 15 PLN (about $7.50 USD) on the menu, when the bill came his perch was actually 30 PLN. What we found out in our travel book on Poland is that if you don't specify the size they will serve you the full portion size which is double - wow, this is too confusing!

As for the rest of Warsaw, we have met some really nice people working here at the hostel. They have been extremely helpful and kind. Until our next entry...Pa (bye)
