Day 33

Our first stop this morning was 1880 Town about 20 miles west on I-90. It began as a movie set with old buildings being moved in from the surrounding area. The land is owned by Richard Hullinger and his father Clarence was a collector extraordinaries of old things. When the film resumed after the winter it moved to a different location leaving the buildings behind and 1880 town was born. 1880 Town now consists of 33 building including a round barn built in 1919. The barn houses the collection of Clarence's old stuff and upstairs are the movie props used in the movie "Dances With Wolves". The horse Kevin Costner rode is still alive and standing at the tender age of 33. There were two cowboys dressed in period costumes and sporting shotguns who walked around shooting up the town. The wind was howling and it was bitter cold so we traveled quickly between buildings.

We entered the Badlands next. We stopped at the visitor's center to stamp our National Parks Passports and watch a 20 minute film. When we got back in the car the clouds were gone and the sun was brilliant. But it was still very cold. There has been substantial rain in the area so the Badlands were a wonderful contrast of green and Badlands Gray with some blue water ponds in site.

We stopped at Wall Drug for the obligatory buffalo burger. Still good and Wall Drug is still a wonderful tourist trap.

We headed for our digs for the night but first we stopped at Country Bear USA. This is a wildlife park you drive through. It contained elk, reindeer, wolves, buffalo, big horned sheep, mountain goats and of course bears. Many many bears. They are all in big open areas, fenced off from each other.

We will be here for 3 nights with day trips to various points of interest.

Love to all,

Shawn, Dirinda, Jan
