Day 21

Well today was the longest travel day we had, not necessarily in road mile but hours. We left Page AZ about 8:00AM heading for the north rim of the Grand Canyon. When we arrived at the junction the road was still closed for winter. Oh Pooooooo! However we were not to be denied. We asked about an alternate route and we were given a forestry map on how to get to Monument Point and Crazy Jugs point.

The route was 39 miles of dirt road and it was all down hill, which of course means uphill back. It was worth it. The views were spectacular and not everyone has encountered that view. On our return trip back up the dirt road we spotted a sign to Fredonia, UT. Woo Hoo! That is on the way to Kanab and our next room.

When we got to Fredonia there was a sign to Pipe Springs National Monument. Well of course we had to that. The area has been inhabited for over 2500 years. First by Anasazi, Navajo, Piute, Mormons and now it is National Monument. The draw to this land was the vast grasslands and a natural spring that flowed year round. Hiram Bingham found the area for the Mormons. He knew the spring could not support a city but could support a lot of livestock. So he built a fortified house over the spring and set it up as a tithing station. This really upset the Piute as they had used the spring to water their crops. Time past and the US government was really upset due the bigamy practiced by the Mormons and they confiscated a lot of Mormon land in retribution. The "Castle" fell into ruin until the US Government decided it really was a part of history, bought the land and called it a National Monument.

We then headed for Zion Canyon. Wow! What magnificent rock spires shooting straight up from ground level. A person could develop a real neck problem trying to see it all. We did part of the shuttle loop but had to cut it short as we were running out of daylight. As dusk settles the animals start to roam and we did not want to be on the road after dark. We arrived in Kanab, UT at 7:30PM ate pizza and salad then headed for our room.
