Hi all,

Sorry about missing an entry last night but we were a bit primitive without WIFI.  We had a difficult time finding a room in Carson City, NV.  It seems they had a bowling tourney, soccer tourney and a motor-cross event happening.  We scored a nice room for only $55.  It included coupons for the Nugget Casino for breakfast.  We had $14 towards three breakfasts and a 5 dollar play coupon.  We cashed in the play coupon so breakfast cost .25 cents.

We spent the night before in Corning, CA.  We went into Sacramento and visited the capitol Bldg.  There was a lot of activity as they were setting up for a law enforcement memorial ceremony which is scheduled to take place this coming week.  We drove east to Carson City via Lake Tahoe.  The scenery was beautiful and the road very steep and winding.  We visited the capitol building.  It was erected in 1871.  It is built of Nevada sand stone and has a silver dome.

This am we traveled to Virginia City.  You all remember Virginia City from Bonanza.  Well it is a very old town that has been preserved as a tourist town.  We arrived before most of the shops were open for business so we saved a lot of money.  This is where the motocross was happening.  We stayed to watch the boys take off.  One of the guys in the 2nd group crashed less that 100 yards off of the start and another guy ran over him.  We stayed for group 4 when two guys crashed and one caught fire.  We decided it was time to leave.

We headed south on 395 intending to enter Yosemite from the East.  No luck Tioga Pass (over 9,000 feet) was closed.  Plan B keep heading south and Death Valley.  The road was good and the driving easy.  There were several things to see along the way.  We stopped at Mono Lake.   It is considered to be dead as there are no fish.  The lake is fed by 5 streams, several in-lake springs and an average of 7" of rain per year.  There is no outlet and the calcium buildup around the edges is quite impressive.  There are some little creatures like brine shrimp that live there.

Tomorrow we will travel through Death Valley and probably spend the night in Pahrumph NV.  I will call Uncle Greg to see if he is there or in Southern, CA.
